El élder Mark E. Petersen (1900–1984), del Quórum de los Doce Apóstoles, explicó que el cuerpo físico y nuestro espíritu son similares en apariencia: “Cada uno de nosotros es un espíritu, y nuestro espíritu ocupa un cuerpo de carne y hueso. El espíritu es la persona real. Nuestro espíritu se parece a nuestro cuerpo, o mejor dicho, nuestro cuerpo fue "hecho a la medida" para adaptarse a nuestro espíritu. El espíritu tiene la imagen y semejanza de Dios, y el cuerpo, si es normal, es a imagen y semejanza del espíritu” (The Way of the Master [1974], pág. 124; véase también 1 Nefi 11:11).
A partir de esto, los espíritus de los que han muerto deben parecerse al individuo tal como lo vivieron; sin embargo, también se enseña que nuestros espíritus eran adultos antes de que comenzara esta vida.
Tal como yo lo entiendo, esta tierra es también el mundo que está habitado por aquellos que han muerto. Suponiendo que los fantasmas son los espíritus de aquellos que actualmente no tienen un cuerpo (ya sea debido a la muerte o como uno de los huestes de Satanás), ¿por qué los fantasmas aparecen como niños?
No sé si hay una respuesta definitiva por ahí. En el manual de fundamentos del evangelio dice:
We are the spirit children of our Father in Heaven. While we lived with Him in heaven as
spirits, we did not have physical bodies. It was part of His plan for us to be born on this
earth and for our spirits to receive bodies of flesh and bones. Our spirits are what gives
life to our physical bodies while we live on the earth.
Just as to be born was a part of our Father in Heaven’s plan for us, another part of His
plan is for us to die. When we die, our spirits leave our bodies. Without the spirit, the
body has no life and is placed in a grave.
But our spirits lived before our birth, and they will continue to live after death. When we
die, our spirits will go to the spirit world to wait for the resurrection, while the body
remains in the grave.
In the spirit world our spirits will have the same form as when we lived on the earth with
bodies of flesh and bones. We will look as we do here. We will think the same way and
believe the same things as we did here. Those who are righteous in this life will still be
righteous. Those who were unrighteous will still be unrighteous. We will have the same
desires after we die as we had while on this earth.
De los últimos dos párrafos, aprendemos que nuestro spirits lived before our birth, and they will continue to live after death.Si nuestros espíritus crecen al mismo ritmo que nuestros cuerpos o lo harían normalmente (o viceversa), entonces un fantasma/espíritu podría aparecer como un niño si una persona muere cuando era niño (ver también Evangelio Doctrinas pg 453-454 comenzando alrededor de 3/4 hacia abajo). Normalmente, los espíritus no se le aparecen al hombre, pero sucede (ver Doctrinas de Salvación Vol 1 'El verdadero ángel guardián' o DC 129 o Doctrinas del Evangelio pg 436 aproximadamente 2/3 hacia abajo)
Los malos espíritus, los que siguieron a Satanás, están aquí en la tierra para engañar al hombre ( DC 50:2,31-32 ). Pueden aparecer en muchas formas. Aparecieron como un ángel a Korihor ( Alma 30:53 ) y probablemente sea seguro asumir que pueden tomar otras formas.
